Nothing stops your shivering on a cold day like a hot drink, and the addition of alcohol makes warms you from the inside out. Wine, rum, schnapps, brandy, and whiskey all pair well with warmed mixers. Hot beverages lend a festive air to holiday parties as easily as they warm you after a fall hike or an afternoon of ice skating.
Try some of these delicious recipes to warm you up when the weather turns cold:
Hot Buttered Rum
(1 serving)
1 ½ oz. dark rum
1 tsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. butter
4 oz. hot water or milk
Nutmeg (optional)
In a mug, combine the rum, brown sugar, butter, and hot water. Stir until butter and sugar have melted. Garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg.
Hot Toddy
(1 serving)
1 oz. brandy
1 Tbsp. honey
1 tsp. lemon juice
3/4 c. boiling water
1 tea bag
In a coffee mug, add honey, brandy, and lemon juice. In another mug, boil water and add tea bag and allow the tea to seep for 2 minutes. Remove the tea bag and pour the tea into the honey mixture.
Irish Coffee
(1 serving)
1 oz. Irish Whiskey
1 tsp. granulated sugar
Coffee
Whipped cream (optional)
In a coffee mug, combine whiskey and sugar. Fill to about ½” below rim with coffee and stir well. Top with whipped cream.
Mulled Cider
(20 servings)
1 750 ml bottle of gold rum
1 1/2 gallons of apple cider
2 Tbsp. honey
12 whole cloves
1 tsp. allspice
12 cinnamon sticks
Lemon or apple slices (optional)
In a stock pot, combine all ingredients and stir well. Heat the mixture over medium heat, taking care to prevent the mixture from getting too hot. Once the mixture is thoroughly heated, turn the heat to low. Strain the cloves and cinnamon sticks from the mixture. Serve the drink in coffee cups garnished with lemon or apple slices on top.
Glogg
1 ½ c. brandy
1/2 bottle red wine
4 whole cloves
2 cardamom pods, crushed
1 cinnamon stick
½ c. raisins
½ c. blanched almonds
¾ c. granulate sugar
2 tsp. brown sugar
Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan. Warm over medium heat, but do not let it come to a boil. Stir often to dissolve the sugar. Once heated thoroughly reduce heat to low.
